Mentoring

Gumaraa’s Cultural Mentoring Program provides meaningful, one on one cultural connection for young people who need a trusted guide, safe space and strong sense of belonging. Each mentoring journey is tailored to the needs of the child or young person, helping them reconnect with identity, stories, Country and culture in a way that feels natural and empowering.

Every mentee is paired with one of Gumaraa’s Aboriginal Cultural Practitioners, ensuring a genuine relationship with someone who can guide them, listen, support and share culture in an authentic and caring way. Whether a referral comes through out-of-home care, NDIS funding, juvenile justice or a private family, mentoring offers connection, confidence and cultural pride through time spent with Aboriginal mentors on Country.

Please note: A travel fee applies for mentoring sessions located outside an 80km radius of Gumaraa’s headquarters in Albion Park. This will be discussed and confirmed at the time of booking.

Who is Mentoring for?

  • Out-of-home-care Aboriginal kids, disconnected from their families and culture due to removal and being raised by non Aboriginal caregivers. These referrals usually come through DCJ/Social Services.

  • Children funded through NDIS, where they have cultural allowance or support funding. They attend structured cultural sessions with Gumaraa.

  • Any child or young person needing cultural connection, including situations where:

    • Parent/s cannot provide regular cultural time.

    • A private caregiver pays for ongoing cultural education with Gumaraa.

  • Youth coming out of incarceration, where cultural mentoring is used as part of rehabilitation, confidence building, stability, and trust. Juvenile justice and corrections are beginning to refer young people to Gumaraa for multi day cultural mentoring experiences or ongoing support.

Who is Mentoring for?

How does it work?

  • Mentoring is tailored to each young person, not a fixed curriculum. We make sure we engage in activities they’re interested in to gain their trust first.
  • Sessions include a 2-hour duration, plus travel time and report writing.
  • Participants can book one session or multiple sessions

  • After initial enquiry, Gumaraa sends a referral form that collects any detailed information such as mob/Nation of origin, care notes, agency contacts, etc.
